Request a Letter of Support

Support Letters

The Ottawa Police Service receives numerous requests for Support Letters throughout the year. A support letter is provided to community partners when applying for local, provincial or federal grant funding.

Due to the number of requests OPS receives each year, priority is given to grant proposals where OPS is an engaged partner of a project that demonstrates alignment with the OPS Strategic Plan and Community Safety and Well Being initiatives or, where the funder requires municipal police engagement or support. Other support letters will be considered on a case by case basis.

Ready to go

Start sooner than later

As soon as practicable, agencies are asked to advise the OPS member engaged in your project of the need for a support letter and complete the OPS application link below, reviewing the guidelines carefully.

Sometimes the best ideas come to us in the middle of the night.

If you haven't yet reached out to OPS to partner on your project, drop us a line, tell us a little bit about the grant you are applying for. Not sure who to call, email pia@ottawapolice.ca and we will try to match you with the appropriate section. The final decision to partner lies with the recommended OPS section based on suitability of your project, time and resource availability.

* Please note that support letter applications are reviewed by, and may only be signed on behalf of the service by the Chief of Police.

Tips for a speedy response

1. Advise the OPS member involved in your project that you will be seeking a letter of support from OPS

3. Attach a copy of your grant application (late draft accepted) and budget to your OPS application

4. Upon approval, you will receive the letter via email from the Office of the Chief

* OPS cannot be responsible for delays due to tardy or incomplete applications.

Our commitment

To ensure that the agency’s project is aligned with the OPS Strategic Priorities, each application is carefully reviewed to ensure;

  • those directly involved at OPS are fully aware of the project and contributions;
  • our Senior leadership is aware of and agrees to the agency’s ask, particularly if there are resource commitments and/or the project/initiative spans a long period of time (especially important as people move around within OPS); and
  • there are no potential conflicts of interest that could hinder your application

Your commitment

We love to collaborate with the community and we all cherish our time and resources. As the applicant, you shall provide notice of your application status as soon as practicable to ensure we direct our resources accordingly.

Where OPS is a project partner, the applicants shall provide the following;

  1. Provide a progress report on the funding status
  2. Provide a copy of the final submitted grant proposal and budget
  3. Provide a copy of the evaluation report(s)

Funding Resources

We have included a list of open sourced funding options as a community resource. If there is a funding link you would like to share with the community, please email the information to pia@ottawapolice.ca.
